On November 5, 2026, the Maȟpíya Lúta community gathered at Christ the King Church in Porcupine, South Dakota, for a joyful and meaningful milestone: the Installation Mass of Fr. Ryen Dwyer, S.J., as Pastor for the Catholic community on the Pine Ridge Reservation. The liturgy was presided over by Bishop Scott Bullock, who formally installed Fr. Ryen in his new role of spiritual leadership and pastoral care.
An Installation Mass is a special liturgy in the Catholic and Jesuit tradition that marks both a priest’s new ministry and the community’s promise to walk with him. During this solemn yet hope-filled rite, the presider leads the priest through a profession of faith, a blessing, and a symbolic act that acknowledges his responsibility to serve, guide, and accompany the people of the parish.
In his words of encouragement, Bishop Bullock offered a message: “Speak the words that lead others to the light of Jesus… Also to speak and live by one’s example. Both together will be at the center of Fr. Ryen’s mission as pastor.”
As part of the installation, Fr. Ryen greeted members of the Oglala Lakota Catholic community—shaking hands, exchanging hugs, and symbolically affirming his commitment to walk alongside the people he will serve. He shared heartfelt words of dedication: “My friends, I pledge to seek your counsel, guidance, and advice—in the spiritual and temporal care of my pastorhood. Thank you for allowing me to walk with you as a part of this community.”
For Fr. Ryen, who has already devoted years to building relationships across Maȟpíya Lúta and the wider Pine Ridge community, this celebration served as both a spiritual commissioning and a heartfelt welcome in his role. Following the Mass, families, friends, parishioners, and community members enjoyed a meal together—a reminder that ministry grows strongest around shared tables, good conversation, and the bonds of community.
